Presentation

Guillaume Minoret (b. Paris, between 1646 and 1650; d. 1720). As a chorister at the famous choir school of Notre Dame, Minoret had Pierre Robert as his principal teacher of music. He became maître de musique at Rodez, when he was between 18 and 22, then succeeded Étienne Moulinié at St Sernin in Toulouse. After a few months at Orléans, he was appointed maître de chapelle of the royal church of St Germain-l’Auxerrois, next to the Louvre. In 1682 he gave a Te Deum there in celebration of the birth of Louis, Duke of Burgundy, the first grandson of Louis XIV, and in 1683 he attained the position of sous-maître of the Royal Chapel. With his illustrious colleague Michel-Richard de Lalande, he remained at Versailles in the king’s service for over thirty years, resigning in 1714.

Minoret’s compositions show a keen sense of thematic unity, and the three middle parts in his orchestra have a characteristic role in his motets, which represent an important link between the grand motet bequeathed by Pierre Robert, his teacher, and the later development of the genre (with the so-called ‘motet à numéro’) by Lalande. This critical volume edited by Yuriko Baba presents 3 of his 6 extant grands motets. We notice the choral majesty of the motet Venite exultemus Domino, interspersed with symphonies and duos, including the lovely ‘Ploremus coram Domino’, which Nicolas Bernier later quoted in its entirety. The more solemn Currite populi, to neo-Latin poems by Pierre Perrin, is probably one of the rare surviving works commemorating the death of Queen Marie-Thérèse shortly after Minoret joined the Royal Chapel. In the more virtuosic Prope es tu Domine the petit chœur plays an important part, with some superb solos before a double choir brings the work to a sumptuous climax at the end.

In this critical volume Yuriko Baba takes many new elements into consideration. She begins with a presentation of Minoret, his works and the few sources still in existence, then proposes dates for the 3 works included in the volume, before comparing the sources in depth and studying the literary texts. She comments on Nicolas Bernier’s borrowing and studies the structure of the works, notably the complex problems to do with the petit chœur; her work brings her to adopt a new approach, which she puts into practice in her remarkable restoration of the musical score.

The volume contains the original preface in Japanese, with French and English translations, 5 facsimiles, the score of the 3 grands motets, and critical notes at the end of the volume. Each motet is available separately for singers and the part-books may also be obtained for rent (see below "Other sort of sheet music available").

Yuriko Baba obtained her PhD in musicology in 2003 for Guillaume Minoret (ca.1650-1720), sous-maître de la Chapelle royale de Louis XIV: édition critique et analyse de son oeuvre, prepared in partnership between the Elisabeth University of Music (Hiroshima, Japan) and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. From 2006-08 she was a researcher for the CNRS (national organisation for scientific research) working at the CMBV. Now a lecturer at the Elisabeth University of Music, she continues to research into the forces available at the Royal Chapel at Versailles and the development of the grand motet.
