Les Pages et les Chantres du CMBV
Musica Florea (dir. Marek Stryncl)
Olivier Schneebeli, direction

This CD gives a chance to discover several major works by the most emblematic composer of seventeenth-century France, most likely first heard in the Jesuit church of St Louis in Paris: both Quare fremuerunt gentes & Super flumina Babylonis are world premiere recording. These grands motets for double choir and double orchestra display Charpentier's subtlety of dramatic effect and musical rethoric, 'at the crossroads between these two aesthetics of the sound and the word' (C. Cessac). It was in the melting-pot of his deeply original inspiration and the Italian influences of his years of training in Rome that these authentic masterpieces from the sacred repertory of the Grand Siècle were forged.
