Olivier Schneebeli, conductor

Isabelle Poulenard (soprano), Philippe Do (haute-contre), Alain Buet (baryton)

Between 1760 and 1790, the French oratorio became established as one of the most modern genres thanks to the compositions of Cambini, Gossec, Giroust, Mondonville, Philidor, and Sacchini. Within this repertoire, the oratorios of Henri-Joseph Rigel - La Destruction de Jéricho, Jephté and La Sortie d'Egypte - deserve a privileged place for their consistent level of inspiration and their formal originality. Their highly dramatic subjects lend themselves to sumptuous musical setting: echoes of distant trumpets, evocations of stormy waters with fully-fleged Romantic orchestral figuration accompanying double choruses, and hymns for female voices alone.
