The Book

Lully's Te Deum was one of the most admired French religious works of its time. Lully composed this work in 1677 for the baptism of his son, which was attended by the child’s godparents, Louis XIV and Queen Marie-Thérèse. The king is said to have found the work ‘so beautiful that he requested that it be played again’. A masterpiece in its architecture, the Te Deum subsequently accompanied many celebrations (royal wedding, military victory, and so on).

It was the first Te Deum setting to use large forces: a petit chœur (a choir including the solo voices), a grand chœur (a tutti choir, comparable to the ripieno in Italian music) and an orchestra with trumpets and timpani. This score, which may be performed by different vocal and orchestral forces, requires a minimum of 5 soloists (2 trebles, high tenor, tenor, bass), a 5-voice choir (trebles, high tenor, tenor, baritone, bass), a string orchestra with two trumpets, and a positive organ.

This score, edited in the series Les Maîtres du Parnasse français, bears witness to the revival work of Le Parnasse Français, an ensemble founded with the aim of presenting in concert rare or hitherto unpublished works belonging to the French musical heritage. The scores proposed in this series have been edited by Louis Castelain, musical director of Le Parnasse français, who has also recomposed the missing parts, where necessary, to enable performance.
